Prevention is Better than Cure: Tips to Prevent Dengue Fever

Dengue is on the rise. Protect yourself and your loved ones. Keep your surrounding and the external environment clean. Here are some useful tips.

Tip 01: Turn over empty pots and buckets, so that they do not collect rain water or any form of excess water.  If by any chance, a container that contains water cannot be emptied, make sure to cover it well or seal it.

Tip 02: Ensure to clean out empty flower pots and avoid over watering potted plants. It is advised to not have any excessively collected water around as it acts as breeding ground for the mosquitoes.

Tip 03:  Mosquito repellent is another effective way of protecting yourself and your loved ones. Apply mosquito repellents on all exposed areas, during the day as well as at night on a regular basis to prevent dengue.

Tip 04: Make sure your window and door screens/curtains do not have any opening. If so, block those areas properly to eliminate mosquitoes.

Tip 05: Make sure to sleep under a mosquito net, especially small children as they sleep during the day, hence the chance of mosquito bite is high during this time.

Tip 06: Always cover garbage cans or dustbin when not in use. Don’t let them collect water as these are identified as mosquito breeding places.

Dengue is caused due to the bite of an infected female ‘aedes aegypti’ mosquito, the disease can be fatal if not identified and treated. Once bitten it takes about four to ten days for the symptoms to show. Here are the most common symptoms:

  • High fever
  • Severe headache
  • Pain behind the eyes
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Swollen glands
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Skin rash (in some cases)

Protect your family and loved from this dengue. Keep your surrounding environment clean.
